Which antiperspirant sprays were recalled for benzene?
Three companies recalled aerosol antiperspirant sprays for benzene: Procter & Gamble (some Old Spice and Secret sprays, November 2021), HRB Brands (Brut and Sure, February 2022) and Unilever (two Suave sprays, March 2022). Each covered all lots that expire in 2023 or earlier. Solid sticks and gels were not part of these recalls.

Questions people ask
What should I do if I have one of the recalled sprays?
The FDA pages say to stop using the recalled product and throw it away. The P&G and Unilever notices say to stop using and discard; the Brut and Sure notice says to stop using it if the expiration date is on or before August 2023.1 Each company lists a phone number for questions and refunds.
Were solid sticks and gels recalled?
Not in these three recalls. P&G's notice says its solid sticks, soft solids and gel products were not impacted.9
Where did the benzene come from?
HRB Brands and Unilever say it came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can, not from an ingredient.2 Benzene is not an ingredient in these products.
Do the company notices say it is a health risk?
The notices say benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. The P&G and Unilever notices also say daily exposure at the levels found would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences, and tell anyone with a concern to talk to a doctor.3
Are the recalled cans still for sale?
The recalls covered lots expiring through September 2023 or earlier, so cans from those lots are now past their dates. If you find an old can at home, check the date and the product name against the table.
