How we check
We read the listing for every product we show. Deodorants and antiperspirants are different products, so we read them differently.
- Deodorants: read the ingredient list. A deodorant is not a medicine. Its label is an ingredient list. We read that list on the product's own page, check that the page is for the exact product we sell, and record the date.
- Antiperspirants: read the FDA drug label. An antiperspirant is an over-the-counter drug. Its label has an "Active ingredient" box, and the label is also published on the FDA's DailyMed site. We check the active ingredient there.
- Look for aluminum by name. We search each list for any aluminum compound, including potassium alum, which is an aluminum salt. A product with one is not called aluminum-free.
- Look for baking soda. We search for sodium bicarbonate, the label name for baking soda.
- Check the ounces. Price per ounce = listing price divided by all the ounces in the listing. We only keep a product when Amazon's own price per ounce on its page agrees with ours.
- Prices. Prices come from Amazon's product data and show the date we read them. We use only listings sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store, since other sellers can charge much more. If a price is more than a day old, the page shows a rounded range instead.
- If we can't verify it, we leave it off. If the page we read is not the product we sell, the product is not shown. If the page is right but shows no ingredient list (some shaving, beard, hair and powder listings), we show the product, say “No list shown” and claim only what the title and details say.
Rules we use on every page
- Aluminum-free means no aluminum compound anywhere in the ingredient list.
- Baking-soda-free means no sodium bicarbonate or baking soda in the list.
- Fragrance listed means the word fragrance or parfum is in the list.
- Picks follow the written rule on each page.
